Hormonal IUD Contraindications. When Should You Not Get One?

While the Hormonal IUD contraceptive is one of the most effective contraceptive methods, it may not be a good fit for individuals with various conditions that require limited usage of the progestin hormone.

A Hormonal IUD may not be a good fit for you if:

you have deep vein thrombosis;
you have been diagnosed with severe liver cancer, a severe liver tumor, or cirrhosis of the liver;
you have or have ever had breast cancer;
you are experiencing unexplained vaginal bleeding – your doctor will need to investigate the cause of this before the insertion of the IUD; and
you have any gynecological or obstetric conditions, such as pelvic tuberculosis or genital cancer.
If you have any of the above mentioned conditions, please consult a qualified healthcare provider. You will be advised on the best contraceptive method for you [10].
