What is a Non-Hormonal IUD?

The Non-hormonal IUD, also called a copper IUD, is a long-term contraceptive comprised of a small T-shaped piece of plastic and copper. The copper IUD is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix. It has strings that hang out of the cervix to allow easy removal through the vagina.

How does a Non-hormonal IUD work?

The Non-hormonal works by slightly changing the chemical environment of the uterus, which in turn damages the sperm and egg before they can meet. Based on the type, copper IUDs can offer 3-12 years of protection from pregnancy. Research shows that while a copper IUD (T380A) is recommended for up to 10 years of effectiveness, it can remain effective for up to 12 years of use. Those who wish to get pregnant can do so immediately after the removal of the IUD [1].
Provided that the person is not pregnant, the Non-hormonal IUD can be inserted at any time, even immediately after an abortion or within 48 hours of giving birth. In the case of a cesarean section, the IUD can be inserted right before closing up the uterus [2].
