Contraception in Chile

In Chile, the ability to choose your own contraceptive method is considered a fundamental human right. Law 20.418 of 2010 establishes the “norms regarding information, orientation and benefits regarding fertility regulation” that ensure the right to receive clear, understandable, complete and confidential information. Among the wide range of free contraceptive methods available in public hospitals and health centers, there are fertility awareness methods, subdermal implants, copper, silver and hormonal intrauterine devices, injectables, pills, condoms and surgical sterilization. The vaginal ring, dermal patch and diaphragm can be purchased privately at pharmacies. In addition, pregnancy tests and emergency contraception are available upon request.
